At the start of the Spring 2006 semester, students shuffling through the busy hallway in front of 117 Science & Research I may have been surprised to see a new addition to familiar surroundings.  With its commitment to pioneering new academic technologies, the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics has implemented what they hope to be the first of several VStations

These kiosks will serve as a communication center between students, faculty, and staff members.  The large plasma display will present everything from important academic news updates to promotional videos highlighting faculty research projects, twenty-four hours a day.  To its left resides another monitor displaying IT-related news and services while below it sits the ‘brain’ of the VStation.

From this computer, students will have the ability to access UH-related resources such as email and Enrollment Services Online and also print, scan, and submit homework via the web.  With the help of a USB flash disk, they will also be able to retrieve and download course materials from their professors’ websites, WebCT, and VNet.  Live video technical support is just a click away on the VStation.  By clicking on the ‘Help’ button on the station’s screen, they are immediately connected to the NSM-IT support desk in the Virtual Technology Center (202 SR1).  From here, support personnel can troubleshoot issues they might be having without ever leaving the office.  Any questions about advising issues can also be answered by staff members via video chat as well *.

The VStation located in the first floor of SR1 serves as a prototype for many more to come.  Once news of the station spreads, NSM hopes to install these kiosks in each of their buildings to facilitate a new means of communication among students, staff, and faculty.
